WDM Optical Transport System Achieves MEF 9 and MEF 14 Certification

CHATSWORTH, CA – March 16, 2010 – MRV COMMUNICATIONS, INC., today announced that its LambdaDriver® optical transport system has demonstrated compliance with two key Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF) standards that help prove the product’s ability to integrate optical transport with Carrier Ethernet services. MRV is a leading networking company with a full line of packet-optical transport (P-OTS), carrier Ethernet, 40G networking and out-of-band networking products.

MEF certification is a critical milestone for telecom equipment vendors, as service provider and enterprise customers demand these certifications because they significantly reduce testing and implementation costs. The company’s LambdaDriver series participated in testing conducted by Iometrix, MEF’s authorized testing and certification lab, and successfully passed MEF 9 and MEF 14 certifications.

MEF 9 defines the test suite when LambdaDriver is used as a user-network interface for setting up Ethernet virtual circuits and virtual LANs over WDM transport. These include Ethernet private line, Ethernet virtual private line, Ethernet LAN and related services. MEF 14 certification demonstrates LambdaDriver’s traffic management features to ensure proper quality of service per service class across an Ethernet business service.

“With these certifications in place, the networking equipment industry can move forward with MEF compliant deployments of integrated WDM transport and Carrier Ethernet switched services,” said Bob Mandeville, president of Iometrix. ‘“MRV’s LambdaDriver series successfully passed our rigorous testing to show that the system meets the MEF technical specifications.”

LambdaDriver is MRV’s third product line to complete MEF certification, following its Fiber Driver™ and OptiSwitch®.

“P-OTS services offer great economics to carriers as well as the bandwidth they need to offer next-generation services. These certifications demonstrate MRV’s commitment to seamlessly fit into the cross-platform networks that are built to support these services,” said Noam Lotan, chief executive officer of MRV Communications. “MEF 9 and MEF 14 compliance allows our customers to confidently implement our products knowing that they can be successfully integrated into a network to deliver the highest level of services.”

MEF is a non-profit organization dedicated to accelerating the worldwide adoption of carrier-class Ethernet networks and services. The certification program verifies compliance of vendor equipment and service provider services to MEF technical specifications through a rigorous series of tests based on MEF approved test suites.

“Service providers have high interest in higher speed networks, and the complexity of their networks is increasing, so supporting interoperability standards such as MEF 9 and MEF 14 has become an important requirement for vendors,” said Michael Howard, principal analyst, carrier and data center networks for Infonetics Research. “With its multiple MEF certifications, MRV is sitting in the right position to help service providers expand their networks.”

About MRV's LambdaDriver Platforms
MRV’s LambdaDriver is its premiere optical transport system for building high-performance enterprise access, metropolitan carrier and long haul transport networks. The LambdaDriver is a multi-functional, compact, modular WDM system that supports both dense wavelength division multiplexing and coarse wavelength division multiplexing technology. LambdaDriver also serves as a packet optical transport system by integrating Carrier Ethernet connection-oriented services and reconfigurable OADM for automated optical mesh topologies with wavelength-level switching. The LambdaDriver series can support data rates from 8 Mbps up to 40 Gbps with seamless future upgrades to 100 Gbps.
