The Post Group Chooses MRV’s TereScope Free Space Optics for Transport of Feature
Length Films and Television Shows
CHATSWORTH, CA – May 05, 2010 – MRV COMMUNICATIONS, INC., today announced that The Post Group, an entertainment post-production company, has chosen its TereScope 10GE free space optics (FSO) solution and has become the first announced customer of the industry’s only 10 Gigabit Ethernet (GE) wireless networking system. MRV Communications, Inc. is a leading supplier of optical communication systems and related networking equipment, and services for high-speed carrier and enterprise networks and specialized aerospace, defense and other communications networks.
The Post Group is known as one of the best post houses in the world, providing post-production services for film, television and multimedia projects. Situated in Hollywood, Calif. The Post Group has provided services to such blockbuster hits as “Apollo 13,” “Independence Day” and “Titanic” and most recently “Astro Boy” and “Boondock Saints II.” In addition to its film projects, the company currently works on top episodic dramas including “CSI,” “House” and “Numbers,” as well as sitcoms, reality and documentary television series and specials.
When the company was faced with moving from its single facility to three separate buildings that were blocks apart from each other, it needed a backbone network that could transfer large film and television media files between buildings. Initially, IT staff considered implementing a dark fiber solution, but it would take months to complete and The Post Group needed a solution that could be up and running immediately after the move. Wanting a solution comparable to its existing 10G LAN backbone, The Post Group decided to implement the TereScope 10GE.
“Speed was critical to this application – both the fast performance of the network links we wanted to build, but also the installation turnaround time,” said Darin Harris, the chief information officer for The Post Group who was responsible for installing the TereScope 10GE. “MRV, and its reseller partners, delivered on both fronts, with the latest FSO technology and by putting together a system that worked immediately even under our compressed timeframe.”
The TereScope 10GE is a wireless 10 Gigabit Ethernet FSO system, that delivers cost-effective and high-bandwidth wireless backbone network extension between multiple buildings without a need for rights-of-way or a fiber-optic cable plant. The TereScope 10GE enables the delivery of Ethernet private line (EPL), service as defined by the Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF) at full 10 Gbps line rate in addition to other fractional speeds.
“The Post Group is part of an industry that demands high-speed, high-quality services, leaving little room for error or downtime,” said Noam Lotan, chief executive officer of MRV Communications. “With the TereScope 10GE, the company can quickly and securely transfer its large media files with the confidence that its network has the bandwidth and availability to meet its client demands.”
About TereScope
The TereScope family of free-space optics (FSO) products provides cost-effective, high-speed wireless connectivity for a variety of last-mile applications. The TereScope 10GE uses innovative proprietary technology to improve optical coupling with the small area 10 GE detectors. This increases the overall optical budget, which increases link range and reliability. Operating at data rates of 1.5 Mbps to 10 Gbps, TereScope systems do not require right-of-way or government permits for installation and are deployable in a day, providing communication links for service providers or enterprises in hours instead of weeks or months. With more than 7,000 links deployed worldwide, MRV has immense experience in the market at selling, installing and servicing FSO equipment.
