Enabling Multi-Service Wavelength Optimization with MRV's Optical Transport Solution
OTN at a Glance
Optical Transport Network (OTN) defined in ITU G.709, is a next-generation, industry-standard protocol that is intended to promote network evolution beyond SONET/SDH and provides an efficient scheme to multiplex services onto optical light paths. The enhanced multiplexing capability of OTN allows different traffic types — including Ethernet, storage, digital video, as well as SONET/SDH — to be carried over a single Optical Transport Unit (OTU) frame.
In addition to multiplexing services, OTN adapts to ever-changing customer requirements and provides more effective optical network management. Since the protocol allows for full performance monitoring of all the multi-service traffic mentioned above, it offers carriers an excellent model to manage performance and troubleshoot Ethernet Services.
OTN offers tremendous CapEx/OpEx benefits to carriers by:
- Reducing CapEx via common transport framework by lowering the cost-per-bit via technology simplification and transport commonality
- Reducing OpEx through network simplification and integration via a technology that offers simplified fault isolation and improved trouble-shooting.
OTN Technology provides benefits to carriers by delivering value across the following domains:
- Transparency across the optical domain by integrating the physical and optical layers for seamless networking
- Efficiency for overall cost reduction and network monetization via simplified multiplexing/demultiplexing of sub-rate traffic
MRV's Solution
MRV's LambdaDriver® OTN Muxponders enrich the versatility and flexibility of WDM based network design and implementation to un-precedent levels. The OTN muxponder module is a multi-service line card that incorporates up to 16 SFP based access ports and one or two XFP or Tunable DWDM based line ports (model dependent). The uniqueness of this module relies in its capability to accept multiple protocols at its access ports in different mixing schemes and aggregate these services over an OTU2 interface with FEC or Enhanced FEC support. Typical target application is aggregation of multiple different services over a single fiber or single wavelength with high level of performance monitoring.
Benefits
- Provides multi-service aggregation (STM1/4/16, OTU1, FC100/200/400, FICON, FE/GE, SDI, HD-SDI, and 3G-SDI clients) with multi-protocol transport and configuration diversity
- Supports non-optical service add/drop multiplexer thus eliminating the need for a dedicated wavelength for each service and consequently providing a significant cost reduction and excellent fiber utilization when compared to discrete optical multiplexing
- Supports OTU2 line Interfaces with FEC or Enhanced FEC for greater reach between optical nodes
- Extensive performance monitoring on all ports
- Fast failover redundancy of line port (2 XFP models)
- Remote loopback per port facilitates troubleshooting and network maintenance
