Pluggables Technology
Pluggable interfaces comprise a series of technological enhancements to traditional optical or copper interfaces. First and foremost, they are very small hot-swappable modules that can easily be removed from the host device.
This simple and powerful concept allows a dramatic increase in flexibility. If the host device supports protocol transparency then one can build a tremendous variety of applications with a very small number of host system types. For example, the EM316-MR module for the Fiber Driver® system provides two SFP interfaces that can be configured with virtually any type of copper or fiber SFP:
In addition, all of the above applications can be implemented using virtually any protocol in common use in voice, data, storage and video networking today!
This unprecedented flexibility is only the beginning of Pluggables technology.
