Optical Cross Connect

Optical Cross Connect

MRV’s Optical Cross Connect (OCC) switches fiber data speeds of 40 Gbps and above in an all-optical OSI Layer 1 switch. At the center of the OCC’s architecture is a three dimensional Micro-Eletro-Mechanical (3D-MEMS) switching matrix. This technology allows transparent, non-blocking switching of single-mode fiber. Connections are made in less than 20 ms with a typical insertion loss of 2.0 dB.

The OCC is scalable in increments of 8 ports to 320 bi-directional ports or 640 fiber terminations. The OCC is available with an optional Multi-Channel Power Monitor that monitors the optical input power of each port and adjusts the mirrors to minimize optical loss. Administration, configuration and mappings are easily performed using the web-based management Graphical User Interface (GUI) or an industry-standard TL-1, either through an RS-232 serial local console port or RJ-45 Ethernet port using SSH or telnet protocols.

Features

  • Remote fiber management - The OCC replaces the digital patch panel, the last obstacle to total automation of test lab operation or network provisioning and maintenance.
  • Wire-once technology - Testing efficiency is increased to save time changing configurations, cleaning fibers, and retesting due to testing errors
  • Transparent, non-blocking switching matrix - Allows testing flexibility with no impact on tests or test results and maximum connection efficiency
  • Carrier-class reliability - 12 year MTBF or more for each component, back-up system ports, redundant power and available controller redundancy.

Applications

In the test lab, the OCC replaces the labor-intense manual configuration of test topologies with a software control. Configurations are stored electronically and recalled as needed. Test time and configuration errors are reduced, repeatability of tests is simplified and lab efficiency is improved.
    • Network or storage equipment manufacturing
    • New product development or interoperability labs
    • Software Regression Testing
    • Customer Support Environments
  • In a central office application, the OCC is used to perform remote fiber cross connections at fiber distribution points. This capability enables remote provisioning, configuration and testing of fiber feeds, distribution and drops and greatly increases the efficiency of network provisioning and maintenance.
