MDU/MTU

Multi-Dwelling Units (MDUs - apartment buildings and condominiums) and Multi-Tenant Units (MTUs - office-buildings) are often at the forefront of service delivery for the simple reason that many customers can be reached with a smaller infrastructure investment.  In some cases, the building owner installs solutions for his tenants, and in other cases service providers provide the connectivity.  Either way, the building needs a low-cost solution for proving Internet service.  In the case of residential access, service today is typically limited to voice and data services, with a few providers looking at video services.  For business customers, it is often additionally important to provide multiple levels of services with varying connection speeds to serve different types of businesses.  Of course, simplicity is key to MTU/MDU networks, especially when the landlord is offering the service directly.  Finally, whenever possible, existing wiring infrastructure should be used rather than new wiring to keep the costs down.

MRV provides a simple solution for MTU/MDU networks, whether they are in a single building or in a complex, and regardless of physical infrastructure.  In the simplest case, using existing copper telephone wiring MRV’s OptiSwitch™ Ethernet-over-VDSL (EoV) solution provides up to 15Mbps symmetric bandwidth by simply connecting a switch in the basement to the service provider network, and distributing EoV through the phone wires to the customers (residents or tenants).  This technology operates simultaneously with the telephone lines, and MRV provides the line-splitters and Customer Premises Equipment (VDSL modems) as well.  The OptiSwitch™ family also includes a full solution for 10Mbps and 100Mbps service over copper or fiber-optic infrastructure, and even allows Gigabit Ethernet services for extremely high bandwidth customers.  The OptiSwitch™ Ethernet Circuit technology controls the bandwidth each customer has access to, and so allows Service Level Agreements (SLAs) with multiple bandwidth and quality levels (such as a low-latency service for video transfer).  Ethernet Circuit technology also provides full security between customers, which is important in a large residential or business service network to ensure privacy and data integrity.

In some cases, MTU/MDU networks span multiple buildings, such as in apartment complexes, or office parks.  MRV’s FiberDriver™ line of fiber-optic transport products provides a full solution for the backbone fiber network in the case that fiber is available.  Backbone networks can easily be extended using MRV’s Wave-Division Multiplexing technology to dozens of Gigabit Ethernet connections.  FiberDriver also provides fiber-optic redundancy options to ensure maximal network availability.

Occasionally, it is difficult or impractical to run fiber-optic cabling from building to building, and digging trenches can cause long delays.  When this is the case, the MRV TereScope™ line of Free-Space Optics (FSO) products provides a quick and easy solution for delivering huge bandwidth quickly, at very attractive prices, between buildings.  With only line-of-site as a requirement, FSO technology creates a high-speed network interconnect (up to Gigabit Ethernet speeds), providing exactly the same service as physical fiber-optic cabling but without the cable.

Managing a MTU/MDU network must be as simple as possible, and must be accomplished from a service office, or Network Operations Center.  MRV provides the MegaVision Web™ Network Management System, together with the In-Reach™ and LX Remote Presence Management solutions.  Using MegaVision and In-Reach, the task of operations support is centralized and simplified.  Remote Presence technology allows the administrator to securely access any part of the network either in-band (through the network itself) or out-of-band (through the telephony network) for management purposes.  MRV’s solution even includes the ability to manage the power connections of remote network infrastructure equipment, so that an administrator can force an unresponsive machine to power-cycle without ever leaving the office.
