Civilian: Local, State and Federal
By taking advantage of modern high-speed networking technology, Government
agencies of all shapes and sizes can dramatically expand their services,
and reduce the cost of providing these services to their constituents.
With more and more information to process and an increasingly connected population,
the public sector must respond by improving inter-agency coordination and
data processing. Additionally, to save taxpayer dollars, it is always
important to work to improve the efficiency of operations. A high-speed
data network can dramatically enhance and improve the services offered as
the same time as reducing the cost to provide these services. For example,
implementing Computer-Based Training reduces the costs required to keep the
personnel updated on new regulations and policies.
MRV provides solutions for government offices ranging from a few desktop
stations to huge campuses with thousands of workers. The OptiSwitch™ line of Ethernet and IP switches and routers handles all ranges of Ethernet
and IP connectivity with a modular and cost-effective solution. This
scalability is key to allowing small pilot projects of network build outs
to be accomplished quickly and cost-effectively. As the needs increase,
the OptiSwitch family scales with the network to provide up to hundreds of
Gigabit Ethernet ports with wire-speed IP routing.
The government, by its very nature, presides in many cases over very sensitive
information, and privacy and security are ongoing concerns. Together
with 802.1q VLANs, MRV’s Ethernet
Circuit technology addresses these issues by providing a full security
and bandwidth control solution. Users, both external and internal,
cannot access prohibited parts of the network, delivering the utmost security
and privacy for this sensitive data. With the bandwidth control feature
of the OptiSwitch™, scarce resources, such as Internet connections and shared
servers can be protected from congestion by reserving bandwidth for high-priority
applications.
Since government services are often critical, the network must be fully reliable
and resilient. MRV products provide a robust solution with many fault-tolerance
features, such as fiber-optic redundancy and hot-swappable line-interface
cards. The OptiSwitch™ family also provides fail-over redundancy protocols,
such as Rapid Spanning Tree for added network survivability.
Military & Intelligence Communities
The Military and Intelligence Communities pioneered the concept of internetworking.
It was DARPA and the NSF that first created the Internet, and these and other
agencies continue to advance the technology. Now, the armed forces,
Homeland Security, and all National Defense organizations must upgrade their
networks to handle the increase in inter-communications, and to support newer
applications, such as widespread videoconferencing. The bandwidth requirements
on these networks continue to grow dramatically, and modern technology is
required to create high-performance, cost effective solutions, all the while
maintaining the highest levels of security.
For campus networks, MRV provides a wide range of solutions with the FiberDriver™ line
of fiber-optic products. Many buildings can be easily interconnected
with various protocols, including Ethernet and IP, SONET and ATM, and Storage
Protocols (FiberChannel, FICON and ESCON). The FiberDriver products
allow networks to be created even in large, spread-out Army bases, where
buildings may be many dozens of kilometers apart. With Wave-Division
Multiplexing products, the bandwidth carried over the fiber-optic infrastructure
can be dramatically increased, by simply using several wavelengths to carry
Gigabit Ethernet or any other protocol between the buildings.
For the data network, MRV offers a wide-range of solutions through the OptiSwitch™ product line. This solution includes small, modular switches for
offices, and scales to hundreds of Gigabits of wire-speed IP routing, covering
everything in-between as well. Along with traditional IEEE 802.1q VLANs,
the OptiSwitch™ also provides the unique Ethernet
Circuit technology, which allows direct control over network traffic
based on packet-parameters, and enables a fully configurable, extremely powerful,
wire speed security system where no one has access to unauthorized parts
of the networks.
To further enhance the security, MRV offers fiber-to-the-desktop support,
with a cost-effective, high-density solution for 100Mbps Ethernet over multimode
or single-mode fiber. Fiber-optic cabling makes wire-tapping virtually
impossible, and so provides the maximal security for information transfer.
MRV’s products also offer a fully redundant solution with many options for
fault-tolerance. The FiberDriver™ product line includes capabilities
for cable-level redundancy, with backup fiber-optic options. The OptiSwitch™
product line supports hot-swappable interfaces, and all reliability protocols,
including Rapid Spanning Tree, RIP, OSFP, and BGP-4.
In large campus environments, the network management process can be complicated
and cumbersome. With MRV’s MegaVision
Web™ Network Management System, together with the In-Reach™
and LX Remote Presence Management solutions, this task is centralized and simplified.
Remote Presence
technology allows the administrator to securely access any part of the network
either in-band (through the network itself) or out-of-band (through the telephony
network) for management purposes. MRV’s solution even includes the
ability to manage the power connections of remote servers, so that an administrator
can force a crashed server to power-cycle without ever leaving the office.
