MRV - First in the First Mile

Ethernet in the First Mile

Transport of advanced services is mandatory for City Carriers, First Mile Access providers and all broadband access providers. In order to reach the goal of supplying a cost-effective, modern service offering and comply with the flexibility demands of next generation service enabling networks, the Ethernet in the First Mile (EFM) providers should be able to run networks over any existing infrastructure.

The first question a provider looking to deploy EFM must ask is what services will be offered.  The Ethernet in the First Mile solution that is deployed should allow a scalable service offering, including broadband Internet access as well as future services, such as Layer 2 transparent LAN services, guaranteed bandwidth services with SLA’s for network availability, Voice services over Ethernet Access networks, and Video and multicast applications.  MRV’s EFM solution provides enough bandwidth, security and Quality of Service control to build a scalable network that delivers all of these services and more.

The next question to ask is what type of infrastructure is available, fiber-optic cabling, twisted pair lines, or perhaps none at all.  MRV provides solutions in all three cases allowing the most flexible and scalable first-mile network imaginable.  If fiber-optic cabling is used, MRV provides a wide variety of optical Ethernet interfaces in the OptiSwitch product line, from 10Mbps to 1Gbps, including long-distance and single-fiber options.  Through the FiberDriver™ product line, MRV also provides a staggering array of media converters, repeaters and fiber-optimizers to complete the deployment.  When twisted-pair cabling is used, MRV provides the Ethernet-over-VDSL solution, which delivers both a symmetric 15Mbps bandwidth link and the standard telephony connection over the same copper loop wiring.  This solution allows broadband services to be delivered without changing the copper-wiring infrastructure in the neighborhood.  Finally, when there is no existing infrastructure and building it out is either too slow or is cost-prohibitive, Free-Space Optics (FSO) technology from MRV’s TereScope™ products may be used to connect customers or from building-to-building in the access network.  The TereScope™ products provide a secure, easy-to-deploy, optical wireless connection from 1Mbps to 1Gbps, ranging up to several kilometers in distance.

MRV provides a “grow-along” modular solution that responds to today’s requirements as well as tomorrow’s demands, with higher potential capacity, at lower costs, using the OptiSwitch™ modular solution. This solution assists with the providers’ needs to rise above their competitors with new and more lucrative and efficient technologies such as video, voice and data QoS enabled services over Ethernet and IP.
