Founded in 1988 by Caltech scientists, MRV has had a long history of technology
innovation. We were early pioneers in the field of fiber-optic transmitter
and receiver components, and have long held a technology leadership position
in several forms of optical transport. MRV was also among the early
pioneers in Ethernet networking, with the first 100Base-TX uplink module
first affordable 10/100 auto-sensing Ethernet switch, the first Gigabit Ethernet
uplink module and the first Gigabit Ethernet switch. At the same time,
our components division was pioneering affordable, small form-factor Coarse
Wave Division Multiplexing technology. In the mid-1990s MRV combined
these two technologies together, to produce the first ever multi-gigabit
Ethernet line interface using 4 channels of CWDM technology together with
an early form of link aggregation.
MRV has extended its lead in optical technology with a broad range of Pluggable Optical Interfaces, including Gigabit Interface Converters (GBIC), Small Form Pluggable (SFP) and 10 gbps Small Form Pluggable (XFP). Pluggable interfaces comprise a series of technological enhancements to traditional optical or copper interfaces. First and foremost, they are very small hot-swappable modules that can easily be removed from the host device.
This simple and powerful concept allows a dramatic increase in flexibility. If the host device supports protocol transparency then one can build a tremendous variety of applications with a very small number of host system types. For example, the EM316-MR module for the Fiber Driver® system provides two SFP interfaces that can be configured with virtually any type of copper or fiber SFP.
MRV has also developed an exclusive
Gigabit Multimode
Extender technology that allows Gigabit data streams to operate on multimode
fiber at distances significantly exceeding the standard (up to 2km).
This technology also extends 100Mbps signals to even longer distances (8km).
We also continue to push the envelope on affordable Coarse Wave-Division Multiplexing,
with new optical modules. We have even created a unique fiber-optic
cable assembly that includes a single-channel optical add-drop multiplexer
inside the cable. Both the FiberDriver
and OptiSwitch
product families feature GMX and WDM technologies.
Through our In-Reach
product family, (resulting from the Xyplex acquisition), MRV has become a
pioneer and leader in Remote Presence Management
solutions, including console, alarm, sensor and power management. We
continue to pioneer in this area, and recently introduced the LX-4000,
a scalable family of extremely cost-effective remote management solutions.
Through our TereScope
product family (resulting from Jolt and AstroTerra acquisitions), MRV has
become the world leader in Free-Space Optics,
(or Optical Wireless) technology. With the broadest product set of
any vendor in the FSO space, we have deployed more than 5500 links and have
19 FSO patents and counting. Recently, we released an exclusive product,
the Photonic
Air Link, which provides a rooftop wireless optical link without requiring
any electrical power on the roof.
We continue to pioneer in the Ethernet world as well. Our Ethernet
Circuit technology provides circuit-style Quality of Service in an Ethernet
packet-based medium. Ethernet-over-VDSL
provides a copper loop solution for data services up to 8,000 feet sharing
the same wiring as the telephone line. Our Voice-over-Ethernet
technology allows Enterprises to build campus networks with both voice and
data on a simple Ethernet backbone, with full quality on the voice.
Finally, our Virtual
Private LAN Services technology allows Metro Ethernet providers to offer
multi-site customers full business solutions for connections from site to
site without interfering with the customers’ networks.
