WDM Topologies

WDM systems allow for a wide variety of topologies, each offering a different solution:
  • Point to Point - provides WDM service between two locations. WDM is used in point to point applications for either bandwidth extension, or to pass storage and data signals on the same fiber connection.

  • Linear Add/Drop - provides connectivity to a series of locations, typically starting at a head-end and proceeding along a path.

  • Star - provides connectivity from a central point to many destinations, in some cases through multiple hops.

  • Ring - just like in SONET, a WDM ring provides a resilient backbone to carry a large number of esrvices of virtually any type of data.
